WHAT CLOTHES TO WEAR FOR FAMILY PHOTOS
FAMILY SESSIONS
When taking pictures in a group, it’s best to keep a couple people in neutral colors and everyone else in different shades of the color profile you choose. Have one child/family member in a bright patterned dress or shirt in the color range! This will create visual interest, tie everything together, and make a beautiful photo.
My quick advice:
Put males in neutral colors (black, gray, dark blue, military green, khaki, white)
Put females in the complimentary colors
Put a young child (or the mother!) in a fun, bright pattern
Some great places to find fun, modern, coordinating family outfits (without being too matchy): Old Navy, Target, H&M, Gap
Advice you didn’t ask for: No matter what happens, make sure mom spends the time to get ready and feel gorgeous. This might mean someone has the wrong pair of shoes on in order to get that extra few waves in your hair. The extra time spent is worth it. When mom feels radiant, it shows!
MATERNITY PHOTOS
When taking maternity photos, comfort is key! Finding maternity clothes that you feel good in is rare — so don’t buy maternity clothes. Size up to get the extra belly room in a dress and throw an easy cardigan over it for some visual interest and texture.
My quick advice:
Put dad in neutral colors
Wear a flowy dress with a cardigan
Some great places to find beautiful, flowy (non) maternity dress options: ASOS, H&M, Pacsun, Forever 21, American Eagle
When should I take maternity photos? My recommendation is around the 7 month mark. Your belly is round (yet manageable), and doing photos for an hour won’t strain you than if you were closer to your due date.
Advice you didn’t ask for: Spend the time necessary to get ready and feel gorgeous. Pamper yourself! When you feel comfortable and beautiful, the natural joy and confidence will shine through in your photos.
NEWBORN PHOTOS
Newborn photos can be a whirlwind, so it’s best to keep clothing as simple and comfortable as possible! Think along the lines of a loose sweater and leggings, a comfortable t-shirt with soft, neutral pants, or a soft, loose dress with a cardigan. We may have to stop for the baby to nurse and all of these options are breastfeeding-friendly.
My quick advice:
Put dad in neutral colors. He can dress up (like the featured photo), or be in a soft T-shirt and jeans/sweats
Wear comfortable, breastfeeding-friendly clothes
Put your baby in a soft, neutral onesie (or a neutral print). You can add a hairband too! My recommendation is to keep it simple and visually quiet.
Some great places to find soft, comfortable options: Target (their loungewear T-shirts are so soft!), Aerie, American Eagle, H&M (for great basics)
When should I take newborn photos? I recommend around 10-14 days after birth. They’re rosy, still sleepy, and most of the post-birth jaundice will be gone.
Advice you didn’t ask for: Even if you’re not feeling at home in the new version of your body yet, recruit your partner to watch the baby, and spend the time necessary getting ready so you feel gorgeous. My goal is to be there while you snuggle and care for your baby. The better you feel, the more stress will melt away — and the photos will reflect the joy and awe you and your partner feel with your little one.
